Reason # 90: Nightmare scenario
Why do we need to defeat Donald Trump and ensure that a Democrat occupies the White House?
As we finished yesterday, I promised that we would change tack and start looking forward into the abyss yawning before us, in the tragic event that Donald Trump is elected President of the United States on November 5 2024. Despite all that has happened and despite the narrow poll results, I persist in a, perhaps illogical, belief in the general decency of those intelligent enough to follow the news and believe that Donald Trump will be soundly defeated in the election. Under the stricture to, pray to God but keep your powder dry, we will continue to try to convince deluded Republicans and Independents that it is dangerously foolish to vote for DJT.
Let’s start with the general. In the past, one important feature of a political campaign was a “platform” i.e. a public declaration of the principles guiding the campaign and subsequent administration. Platforms have fallen out of favor, particularly with Donald Trump. He does not like to be specific, to be dictated to by others and certainly not to be held to account by specific promises, since he seldom keeps promises – just denies that he made them.
So Donald Trump does not have a platform? Yes and no. Those ultra-conservative right-wing Republicans who kowtow to him have pieced together perhaps the most exquisitely detailed political platform ever constructed. It is called “Project 2025 Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise”. It is so terrifying that all voters should read it. The trouble is that it is more than 900 pages long and so systematically atavistic that it is nearly impossible to gag down.

This should not surprise. The document is a brainchild of the Heritage Foundation, the bastard projecy of the old John Birch Society. Heritage’s president, Kevin Roberts, leads the Project following the disastrous public relations backlash it encountered. It’s close link to Donald Trump is evident in that 140 of its contributing authors (half) served the Trump administration.
Fortunately, David Beck and the good folks at
have collected multiple resources, that provide a comprehensive view of the poisonous document.
They start with a “gottcha” interview of Russell Vought, self-avowed Christian nationalist and former Trump staffer, by two investigative reporters, posing as potential donors. He explains to them that although Trump has publicly disavowed Project 2025, he is secretly supportive and will appoint many of the authors in his administration, including Vought, if elected.
More important, Vought’s administrator reveals that there is a secret, unpublished, second phase of Project 2025, that will go into action immediately, if Trump is elected.
There are detailed descriptions and analysis of the provisions of Project 2025

as well as a tabular summary of proposed policy changes (atrocities).

,,As a long-time admirer of Heather Cox Richardson, her interview on Red, Wine and Blue, was an informative delight.
Tomorrow, we will start to try to pick the most threatening issues where Donald Trump would existentially change the nature of our society and government and discuss them in greater depth.
